As I recover from post-finals trauma, I actually have time to sleep, read, and spend a few moments to think and pray about Costa Rica. Three weeks from today, if God wills it, Abby and I will be in Costa Rica with my Tico family.
Two reminders today have turned my thoughts away from myself- my inadequacies and fears and hectic schedule- to what this trip is all about:
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness. (Christmas)
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death-
even death on a cross!
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
These passages, from Phil 2 and Luke 10, Are radical. Jesus- the Creator and Sustainer of all things- he did what?
Became a man?
Carried our infirmities and diseases?
Was tempted in every way that I am?
Chose poverty?
Endured separation with his Father and tore the curtain in two?
Gave up every comfort imaginable to suffer on this earth and die a mockery of a death?
Why? So he could set us free. So he could love us, that we might love others and that his goodness and love might be put on display for a dark and hurting world to see. So that his name might be lifted high in all places, among all people.
So that he could sit with Mary and his disciples, in their living room, and have a relationship with them. With us :)
thoughts shaped by people, places, and experience
T. S. Eliot
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
